Bird Feeding Tips
Where is the best place to put Birdkiss bird feeders?
We recommend placing your feeders on poles or trees within three feet of a window. For added safety, choose a location near trees or shrubs where birds can quickly retreat in the event of a predator's approach.
Why still haven’t seen a single bird in my bird feeder?
It can take some time for birds to find and begin using a new feeding. Local birds tend to scout their area for new feeding opportunities during milder winter weather, which is why feeders may be less busy on nicer days than during inclement weather.
Once a few local birds find a feeder, they can attract others to the area. If you're still having difficulty attracting birds, consider making the space around your feeders more appealing to them.
How to attracting birds to your backyard?
Birds can be drawn to a bird feeder, but this alone won't keep them coming back. To create a lasting habitat, it's important to provide native plants that offer food, shelter, and nesting sites. Local flora is best suited to the soil and water conditions of your area and is adapted to meet the needs of the local wildlife. Choose a variety of plants, including those that produce nectar, fruit, seeds, and nuts. Local gardening and birding clubs, as well as government resources, can provide information on the best plants to choose from.
Clean water is also an important factor in attracting birds. Birdbaths are a great way to offer water, but you can also enhance their appeal by setting up a slow, steady drip. This can be accomplished by placing a plastic bottle with a small hole above the birdbath. The sound of dripping or flowing water is especially attractive to birds.
Nesting is another critical element in creating a bird-friendly backyard. Nest boxes and platforms can provide birds with a place to lay their eggs and raise their young. Additionally, encouraging lichens and spiders can help smaller birds, like gnatcatchers and hummingbirds, to construct their nests. Providing natural materials like cotton batting and twine can also help birds build their nests.
Creating a bird-friendly backyard takes time and effort, but the rewards are well worth it. By providing food, shelter, water, and nesting sites, you can attract a diverse array of bird species and create a beautiful natural habitat in your own backyard.
How to keep squirrels away from bird feeders?
To keep squirrels away from bird feeders, you can try the following methods:
Offer foods squirrels don't like, such as safflower seed, nyjer seed, and white proso millet. They’ll likely head elsewhere for their next meal.
Squirrels can easily jump up to seven feet horizontally. Place bird feeders away from trees to prevent squirrels from jumping onto the feeder from nearby limbs.
Get a squirrel-proof feeder pole with a baffle attachment to keep squirrels from reaching the smart bird feeder.
Buy a squirrel baffle and install it onto the feeder pole at least five feet high.
Attach a Slinky spring to the top of the feeder pole to deter squirrels.
Feed squirrels separately in a different location with food they enjoy, like corn, peanuts, or sunflower seeds.
How to clean smart bird feeder?
To maintain the safety and comfort of birds, it's important to regularly clean your Birdkiss smart bird feeder. Cleaning the feeder helps prevent the spread of avian diseases. Here's how to clean your feeder:
Cleaning the Birdkiss smart bird feeder lens: Add a drop or two of lens cleaning fluid or rubbing alcohol to a microfiber cloth or cleaning wipe. Gently wipe the lens to remove fingerprints, oil, smudges, dirt, and dust.
Cleaning the base: Remove the bird seed container and wash the base with water. Use a soft brush to remove any excess seeds and dirt.
Cleaning the inside of the birdseed container: Fill a silicone measuring cup with water and pour clean water into the bird seed inlet on top. Let the water flow out naturally and let it dry.
Other parts: If the feeder cover, bird perch, mounting bracket, solar panel, or other parts of the bird seed container become dirty, rinse them gently with water and wipe them clean with a cloth.
We recommend cleaning your Birdkiss smart bird feeder once a week with a mild disinfectant to keep it clean and safe for our feathered friends.
